Discover Communication began as a very small enterprise in Red Deer, providing services to a couple of clients who were unable to access services in other ways. When I moved to Calgary I brought the practice with me and have slowly grown it over the past few years. I love the flexibility it offers and the ability to provide the services in the ways that work best for the families.
I truly enjoy meeting a child for the first time and learning about their needs and figuring out what I can do to help them. Every child has something new to teach me about communication and interaction. My therapy is play based and parents are most welcome to join in and play with us. It's important that parents are able to carry on the ideas to practice at home.
Over the past 30 years I have learned a lot about Speech Pathology in general and myself as a therapist. The most amazing thing about the whole journey is that I feel as passionate about communication and helping children as I did when it all started. There are always new things to learn about in the profession. I love to work with children of all abilities, and really have a soft spot for severe children, and those with autism and apraxia of speech. I feel fortunate that my experience has been so broad and I have had the opportunity from to learn from so many fascinating and complicated children.
The most important step in my evolution as a therapist was becoming a parent myself. Until then working with children was easy. Once I became a parent the perspective changed completely and I began to see how truly special each of these little people are and how much their health and successes impact a whole family. Being a Mom helped me become a better therapist.
